It can only affect (not screw up) the search engines if you want to change all your pages from .html to .php and use .htaccess for this , or something similar to this, otherwise I cannot see a situation where it affects search engines, in that one case search engines will recache your site after a while.

Last question - using htaccess file, this doesn't screw up indexing by search engines? Thanks.

Yes, you just need to add the correct line in the htaccess file, some server might need a different line than the 3-4 samples we provide, your host can give you the exact .htaccess line if you want to put php code inside the HTML pages.

I have existing webpages that are.htm - so by just amending the htaccess file - I don't have to change anything? just post the code and it will do it?
